Kind Regards: a Shining Star

Rachel DeeThis month’s Kind Regards posting highlights the Presbyterian Homes & Services (PHS) Shining Star Program in which anyone that has been touched by the people and services that make up our ministry nominate employees who have delivered exceptional service. Each nomination is coupled with a donation to the PHS Foundation and a golden Shining Star pin for the employee. The family nominated nurse Rachel Dee who serves at Johanna Shores for the unforgettable care and love she demonstrated for their mother.

Dear Presbyterian Homes Foundation,

Enclosed is a contribution in honor of the staff at Johanna Shores, first floor Gables and in particular, nurse Rachel. All staff members from the nurses to the aides to the nutrition services staff and beyond, provided compassionate and loving care of our mom, most notably at the end of her life. Rachel clearly stood out among them.

Rachel seemed almost like a granddaughter to mom. Mom would regularly hang out in her wheelchair by the nurse's station, which was just outside her room, where she usually gave some sort of direction or advice to the staff. Mom was known to tell it like it is, and her honesty wasn't limited to family, although we would argue the staff was family in mom's eyes.

Rachel never appeared annoyed by mom's presence and advice. She took it in stride and treated mom like a member of the team, with dignity and respect.

Once mom entered hospice, Rachel was in constant contact with us when we weren't able to be present. She would check in frequently to update us on mom's status. Her actions went above and beyond expectation. The day that mom passed away, Rachel was clearly distraught. While some might argue that staff should maintain composure and keep emotions in check, we viewed this demonstration of genuine love and compassion through a much different lens. We see her as a consummate professional who authentically cares about the people in her charge. She is a credit to the nursing profession and her patients are extremely blessed to have her caring for them. She is truly a Shining Star.

Thank you for everything Rachel, we will never forget you.

With gratitude,

Elvera's Family

Kind regards
