It was a full house at Norris Square on January 15, as over 200 residents and guests attended the Winter Carnival celebrating the Grand Opening of the senior living community’s campus expansion. Norris Square is located at 6995 80th Street South, Cottage Grove, MN, 55016. Guests at the Winter Carnival enjoyed hot cocoa and wintery treats, live entertainment and community tours of the new care center and senior living apartments.
Minnesota Representative Tony Jurgens (District 54B) mingled with guests and expressed his appreciation to PHS for investing in Cottage Grove by building and expanding Norris Square. Speaking at the dedication ceremony held on January 8, he recalled that when Norris Square was first being built on the site of an old shopping mall over a decade ago, he was serving on the Cottage Grove Economic Development Authority. “We took calls from people asking, ‘What’s happening at the old mall?’” He has followed the senior community’s growth closely, attending the dedication when Norris Square opened in 2008 and the groundbreaking of this expansion in August 2017. Jurgens commended PHS for bringing much needed additional services to Norris Square. Addressing residents directly he said, “As your needs change, you can stay home right here, take advantage of the increasing services and enjoy your friends and family.”
The highpoint of the dedication ceremony occurred when Myron Bailey, Mayor of Cottage Grove, joined Mary Jane Arnfelt, a Norris Square resident, to cut the ribbon signifying the official opening. Bailey recognized Arnfelt as the former school nurse at Pine Hill Elementary School when he attended as a student.
Bailey described how PHS set the vision for Norris Square from the beginning. “Presbyterian Homes recognized the emerging need and increasing demand for senior housing in our community. The Norris Square expansion addresses these needs,” he said. Bailey also commended PHS for adding 72 new jobs in addition to the existing 38 positions at Norris Square. “I know PHS will continue to be a great partner with the city,” he said.
Norris Square first opened in 2008 as the first senior living community in Cottage Grove. The expansion includes a 2-story skilled nursing care center building and a 3-story senior apartment building with underground parking located due north of the original buildings. The new Gables care center serves about 78 long-term care residents, including 18 care center memory care residents. The care center is designed in a home-like setting to accommodate Liberty Personally Designed Living™, the care model of PHS. The expanded Terrace offers 68 additional independent senior living apartments. All are connected to the Town Center that offers an array of amenities including a bistro, community room and chapel, general store, style salon, theater and wellness center.
