The mission of Presbyterian Homes & Services (PHS), “to honor God by enriching the lives and touching the hearts of older adults,” is fulfilled when the actions of our employees demonstrate our stated values. In doing so, they “make their mark” upon those we serve. In our continuing series, “Make your Mark,” we introduce you to PHS employees who are living out these values.
Have breakfast, lunch or dinner in the Carondelet Village dining room and you will undoubtedly meet service excellence superstar, Heather Ellner. As a server at Carondelet Village in St. Paul, Minnesota, Heather delivers delicious meals and heaps of smiles.
Service Excellence is just a way of life for Heather, who is always ready with a warm greeting and knows each person’s likes and dislikes. She effortlessly anticipates needs whether it’s steak sauce or an extra serving of dessert.
But what Heather enjoys most about her work is that she has come to love each person she serves, “the most meaningful thing about Carondelet is working face to face with the residents, no contest!” said Heather. More than serving meals, Heather embraces opportunities to sit down over a cup of coffee to truly get to know each person.
Through smiles from across the table, the residents love Heather right back and look forward to seeing her at meal time. Her kind and compassionate service doesn’t go unnoticed. In fact, it motivated four different residents to send personalized notes to recognize her.
Here are some excerpts from the resident’s rave reviews:
Heather is a very caring and compassionate person. I see her assisting the others in such a kind way. In caring for their needs or getting their food, she treats them with the love of Jesus.
Heather greets us all by name. She is very helpful in making suggestions and explaining menu items. She remembers what people's favorite foods are and remembers our birthdays. She is simply an outstanding employee.
She clearly loves working here and is especially kind and cheerful with everyone.
Heather is a remarkable and dedicated worker and seems to be here almost every day. Regardless of what we ask for, she will do everything she can to make it happen. She treats everyone with respect and glad to serve. She is truly amazing.
By greeting each person by name, remembering the little and the big things (like birthdays, family members and favorite meals) Heather leaves an indelible mark on the people she serves.
