Presbyterian Homes & Services (PHS) was named as the #1 best employer in Minnesota by Forbes, a national publishing company known best for its magazine that features articles on finance, industry, investing, and marketing topics.

According to its announcement posted August 24, Forbes partnered with market research company Statista to pinpoint those organizations liked best by employees and ranked the results by state. The list was compiled by surveying 80,000 Americans working for businesses with at least 500 employees. Surveys were conducted on a rolling basis from October 2019 to May 2020.

PHS wasn’t aware of the survey and only learned of the top finish after it was posted and PHS employees informed senior leadership. The ranking places PHS at the top of a list of 50 large employers doing business in Minnesota, including government organizations. With nearly 6,000 employees, PHS was recently ranked as the 27th largest employer in Minnesota by the Minneapolis-St. Paul Business Journal and is the 4th largest non-profit senior living provider in the country.

“We’re honored to be recognized by a respected business publication like Forbes,” said Dan Lindh, CEO of PHS. “Throughout our history, PHS has focused on culture as a driver for broader organizational success. Our role as leaders is to equip people to fulfill their higher calling and stay true to our Christian ministry and values. We don’t seek accolades or participate in surveys where employers pay to be listed in ‘top workplace’ type lists. Our employees and customers tell us whether we are honoring our commitments to them and we always strive do better.”

Dan explained that on every employee’s first day on the job, they hear the PHS promise: Employees are the most important resource in our ministry. We are committed to an environment where they are valued and empowered to make a difference. “Any success we have can be attributed to them,” he said.

Senior Vice President of Employee Experience Traci Larson agrees. “We listen to our employees and do our best to honor them, because ultimately our mission is to honor God through our work serving older adults. We can only be effective in our ministry together if all who work here feel like they are cared for, recognized and appreciated,” she said.

As an organization where people make lifelong careers, PHS is committed to help employees achieve their personal and professional goals. Employees are encouraged to take advantage of the many opportunities to learn and grow like scholarships to help employees complete certification and degree programs at accredited educational institutions.“We know that when we foster the talent and ignite the spirit of our employees, they rise to give their best to our residents, clients and each other,” Traci said.

The Forbes ranking validates the data PHS collects internally through its “Voice of the Employee” survey, an important channel for employees to offer feedback, related to their sense of engagement and effectiveness. “Despite the current challenges of COVID-19, we have seen higher employee engagement than ever before as our people rally to the great needs around us,” said Traci.

Although the PHS employees surveyed by Statista remain anonymous – you know who you are, and so does God!  We are humbled and honored that you have put us at the top of the Forbes list of employers in Minnesota. Thank you for your confidence in PHS and know that we are celebrating with you!
