The mission of Presbyterian Homes & Services (PHS), “to honor God by enriching the lives and touching the hearts of older adults,” is fulfilled when the actions of our employees demonstrate our stated values. In doing so, they “make their mark” upon those we serve. In our continuing series, “Make Your Mark,” we introduce you to PHS employees who are living out these values.
In today’s Make Your Mark spotlight, we share a story about Sherrice Harris, a Nursing Assistant in The Arbor at SummerWood of Chanhassen in Minnesota. Since starting at PHS in 2014, Sherrice brings energy and imagination together with dedication to her work. As her supervisor Jonathan Nelson confirms, whether she is singing karaoke with the residents or taking a double shift, Sherrice is eager to jump in and do whatever is needed — a reflection of the PHS value of Ready & Engaged People.
Nurse Michelle Johnson says, “I am always glad when I see Sherrice on the Arbor schedule. She is dependable, and she is a hard worker. Within the first few hours, she will have sung into the hearts of our Arbor residents and put a smile on each face.” Michelle continues, “She is able to redirect and reassure residents quickly. Sherrice has a genuine love for the Arbor folks and treats them with respect.”
Community Support Assistant Christy Quiner recalls how Sherrice loves to sing karaoke with the residents. Christy says, “Everyone grins when Sherrice picks up the microphone. She encourages the residents to sing louder, and she sings as well! Sherrice knows how to make a fun time even more joyful.”
Sherrice brings joy to the residents because, as Resident Services Director Elizabeth Rue observes, “Sherrice takes the time to know each of her residents and their history.” She knows the names of a resident’s children and how a resident likes their coffee by engaging with them in the most meaningful ways possible. Sherrice is tirelessly on her toes. One Arbor resident commented about Sherrice, “She’s always moving. She’s really good.” When asked how she does it, Sherrice laughs, “I think God gives me a boost of energy! And I try to make myself available.”
Sherrice found her heart for serving older adults because of her grandmother. Sherrice says, “My grandma basically raised me, and she is why I have such a respect for the elderly.” The residents in The Arbor notice that Sherrice is respectful, patient and truly loves them. One resident said to Sherrice, “You’re my best friend, because you take such good care of me.”
We at PHS are grateful for Sherrice and employees like her who “take such good care” of the residents. Your ready and engaged hearts do not go unnoticed. Your energy and dedication truly make their mark, creating smiles in the eyes of the people around you.
