We invite you to take a peek inside our weekly Light for the Way devotional series provided for staff.
By Pastor Chris Wheatley, PHS Senior Director of Pastoral Care Services
With all wisdom and understanding, God made known to us the mystery of his will according to his good pleasure, which he purposed in Christ, to be put into effect when the times reach their fulfillment—to bring unity to all things in heaven and on earth under Christ.
Today our Light for the Way devotional is focused on our 2023 Pastoral Care theme, “Know God, Love God, Serve God.” Let us turn to one of the ways we know God, through Jesus Christ.
For the next four weeks, we will be considering some of the ways that we, beings of limited perspective and imperfect understanding, are able to grow in knowledge of God, the infinite Source of being who transcends all description. And while that seems like a daunting task, it is possible because God loves us. God has created a world for us, filled with Divine fingerprints. God has been speaking to us throughout our whole lives, and draws near to us more often than we realize.
And Christians proclaim that there is one way to know God that is above all others, because at a single point in time, in a particular place across the ocean, God became incarnate as a human being to live, teach and die among us.
That is why Christians can speak so boldly about the nature of our Creator; we have seen it dwelling among us. We know that God has a heart for the poor and the rejected, because Jesus spent his time proclaiming good news to the poor and the rejected. We know that God loves sinners, because Jesus spent so much time with sinners that the priests of his day criticized him for it.
In everything that Jesus did and said, he revealed the true nature behind our reality. That even when the world seems scary and we feel alone, God is with us and loves us, because Christ showed us his heart.
Every time you hear a story about Jesus, remember that you are hearing a story about the author of everything that is and will ever be. God was born in a manger, not a palace. God defied the powers of the day on behalf of truth. God healed the sick and gave hope to the hopeless. God died on a cross for you and for me.
And at the last, God told us to go forth and love one another.
