Where detours lead

Light for the Way seriesWe invite you to take a peek inside our weekly Light for the Way devotional series provided for staff.

By Pastor Tom Volker, Founders Ridge

“[Jesus] said to them, ‘Therefore every teacher of the law who has become a disciple in the kingdom of heaven is like the owner of a house who brings out of his storeroom new treasures as well as old.’” —Matthew 13:52, NIV

A couple of years ago, I was transporting some of our children to their school in Minneapolis before going to the church I was serving. Being a creature of habit, I took my usual route from the school to the church only to be rerouted because of road construction. The road of the detour was unfamiliar to me. I kept going, all the while wondering where this path was going to take me ….

As it turned out, there was less traffic than my old route, and I made it to my destination quicker than I had thought I would. I felt that feeling that all positive discoveries give us … relief and joy.

How often have we gone to the well-worn parts of the Bible to feed our faith and look for guidance? Then, for some reason, an unexpected detour happens in our lives. We didn’t have the time to read that day. We didn’t have access to our devotional materials when we normally do. Then, out of the blue, a new phrase from Scripture comes to us. It seems to lead us to a new discovery of God’s grace and mercy.

The signs were there the whole time. That word of God was waiting for that moment in our lives … that time of inconvenience … that time of frustration that was out of our control … that time of surrender to the word of God. In that moment, that detour led us to something new to treasure. May God bless us with detours that lead us to discover the treasures He has for us in His word.

Pastor Tom VolkerPastor Tom Volker has served at Founders Ridge as campus pastor since March of 2022. It has been only a month, but he absolutely loves the team and residents that he gets to be around by the grace of God. Tom served for 23 years as a parish pastor in different capacities at five different congregations in three different states. He and his amazing wife Verna have four children - three boys and a girl - and reside in South Minneapolis. When not at Founders Ridge, Tom is transporting children, reading, enjoying a movie at the theater, cooking or just trying to be grateful for the adventure that this God has placed him on. (Did that sound too preachy? Sorry, old habit.)

The Light for the Way series provides staff with an examination of a biblical reading to deepen our focus on scripture. Thank you for engaging with this series as we seek wisdom through prayer and reflection as a Christian Ministry.
